Cameron Vows 'Truly Seven-Day-A-Week' NHS

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 28 Maret 2015 | 22.11

David Cameron has launched his party's election campaign in Manchester with a pledge to deliver a "truly seven-day NHS" for England if he is returned to power on 7 May.

The Prime Minister used Conservative spring conference to set out plans for patients to be able to access hospital services at weekends as well as during the week.

It came the day after Labour leader Ed Miliband promised a "double lock" to safeguard the future of the NHS - £2.5bn of new investment and limits on further privatisation.

Mr Cameron said that under Tory plans, hospitals across England will offer consultant-level services seven days a week by the end of the next parliament in 2020.

The changes will start with emergency and urgent care together with supporting services, such as diagnostics.

It follows the commitment to ensure patients can access GP surgeries seven days a week, between 8am and 8pm.

"For years it's been too hard to access the NHS out of hours. But illness doesn't respect working hours. Heart attacks, major accidents, babies - these things don't just come from nine to five," Mr Cameron said.

"And the truth is that you are actually more likely to die if you turn up at the hospital at the weekend. Some of the resources are not up and running. The key decision-makers aren't always there.

"With a future Conservative government, we would have a truly seven day NHS."

However, the proposals have been met with scepticism by the British Medical Association (BMA).

"The £2bn extra funding that has been pledged falls far short of what is needed to deliver existing services, let alone fund additional care," said BMA council chair Dr Mark Porter.

"The NHS is recovering from one of the worst winter crises on record, during which some hospitals were forced to close their doors because they couldn't cope.

"With existing services stretched to breaking point… the NHS needs far more than just words to deliver extra care.

"Without a detailed, fully-costed plan, this is at best an empty pledge and at worst shameless political game playing with the NHS ahead of the election."

School Now Linked To 8 Girls Over IS In Syria

Four schoolgirls banned last week from leaving the UK over fears they would travel to Syria are from the same London school as four other girls who have already fled to join Islamic State, it has been revealed.

A judge has decided that it can now be made public that all eight teenagers were pupils at Bethnal Green Academy in east London.

In February, Kadiza Sultana, 16, Shamima Begum, 15, and Amira Abase, 15, left their east London homes for Syria, two months after a fellow pupil is thought to have left to join IS there.

But police had also raised concerns about four other girls at the school.

Last week, Mr Justice Hayden made the girls - aged 15 and 16 - wards of the court, preventing them from leaving the country without a judge's permission.

He made the move after social services at Tower Hamlets Council made an application to the Family Division of the High Court in London.

Social workers told the judge the girls might flee to areas controlled by the Islamic State and counter terrorism specialists at the Metropolitan Police also gave evidence during the week-long hearing.

The judge changed his order banning identification of the girls after the press appealed that identifying the school would be in the public interest.

The Press Association news agency argued that parents in the area considering schools for their children had a right to know.

:: Earlier this month Mr Justice Hayden, who said that sometimes the law had to intervene to protect young people from themselves, barred a 16-year-old boy from travelling abroad by making him a ward of the court.

The boy's two elder brothers had already been killed fighting for militants in Syria.

He also banned identification of this youngster but revealed that the local authority which had applied to have him made a ward of the court was Brighton and Hove City Council.

A British military health worker has been declared free of Ebola after being the first patient in the world treated with an experimental drug.

Corporal Anna Cross, 25, was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital on 12 March after contracting the disease.

She said she decided to allow doctors to use MIL 77, which they acquired from China, after "careful consideration".

Speaking at a news conference in London, she recalled her response when asked whether she was prepared to try the experimental drug.

"I said: 'I have Ebola, so I'd rather that than high-dose vitamin C. I'll have what drugs you think are good for me,'" she told reporters.

Labour Uses Miliband's 'Hell Yes' To Woo Donors

Labour is giving away 'Hell Yes' T-shirts to party donors after Ed Miliband used the phrase when questioned about whether he was "tough enough" for Downing Street.

The Labour leader and Prime Minister David Cameron faced tough questioning earlier this week during the 90-minute Sky News Channel 4 Battle for Number 10 programme.

During the election set-piece event, Jeremy Paxman grilled Mr Miliband, suggesting he was a "north London geek" who could not handle the likes of Vladimir Putin.

"Am I tough enough? Hell yes, I'm tough enough," Mr Miliband said.

A Labour spokesperson said: "These limited-edition Ed Miliband-inspired election T-shirts are available to anybody who donates £15 or more online this weekend.

"Labour raised over £1m in small donations online in the last year, and our Vote Labour tea-towels were hugely popular.

"While the Tories rely on a small group of super-rich donors, Labour's election campaign is built on the contributions of thousands of members in every corner of the country."

Chancellor George Osborne poked fun at Mr Miliband's use of words when he addressed the Tory spring conference in Manchester.

"I was listening to Ed Miliband, with all that legendary statesmanship of his, saying 'hell, yeah, I'll be a leader'," he said.

"I'll tell you where that leads: a return to rising unemployment; a return to rising debts; a return to economic chaos.

"Hell? Yes indeed."

Mr Cameron refused to debate Mr Miliband head-to-head, but agreed to the 90-minute session which was split into 18-minute interviews for each man with Paxman and an 18-minute questions session with a studio audience.

Despite Mr Miliband's attempts to show his tougher side, an ICM/Guardian poll gave victory to Mr Cameron with 54% of the 2,000 people asking saying he had performed best, but it was close and 46% gave the win to Mr Miliband.

Oisin Tymon, the Top Gear producer punched by Jeremy Clarkson during a row over food, has told police he does not want to press charges.

Mr Tymon had to drive himself to hospital when he was left with swelling and a split lip after the Top Gear presenter launched an "unprovoked" attack on him at a hotel in North Yorkshire on 4 March.

Clarkson's Top Gear contract has not been renewed by the BBC after an internal investigation found he had "crossed a line".

The outspoken presenter received widespread public support - including from his friend, Prime Minister David Cameron - while one million people signed a petition calling for the BBC to reinstate him.

But Mr Tymon has received huge abuse from trolls on Twitter, including death threats.

UK Airlines Bring In New Cockpit Safety Rules

By Charlotte Lomas-Farley, Sky News Correspondent

New safety rules have been introduced in the UK after 150 people on board the Germanwings Airbus A320 were killed when it crashed in the French Alps.

The UK's aviation regulator, the UK Civil Aviation Authority, has contacted all British airlines to get them to review all relevant procedures.

Here is a breakdown of how the safety rules affect different airlines:

:: Thomas Cook, Thomson and easyJet - from Friday, all three are changing their safety procedures to ensure that two crew members are in the cockpit at all times.

:: Virgin Atlantic and Monarch - both airlines say that while a two crew policy has always been common practice, they are in the process of making this formal policy.

If a pilot or co-pilot needs to leave the cockpit for any reason then a cabin crew member will stand in.

:: Jet2 and Flybe - both carriers already implement a two people in the cockpit at all times policy, as does Ryanair.

:: British Airways - the airline has refused to comment on the policy of its cockpit manning levels. The airline has insisted it does not discuss security issues.

Miliband's NHS Pledge At Campaign Launch

Labour leader Ed Miliband has launched his party's General Election campaign with a promise to safeguard the future of the NHS.

The event in east London came after Mr Miliband and Prime Minister David Cameron answered questions in the Battle For Number 10, the first showdown of the campaign.

Launching the party's push for power in the "tightest general election in a generation", Mr Miliband said: "The Tories say this is as good as it gets.

"We say Britain can and must do better than this."

Referencing the special programme broadcast on Sky News and Channel 4, the Labour leader claimed the PM's performance showed he was "rattled", "running from his record" and "living in a different world".

The election on 7 May is a choice between "two different visions" for Britain, Mr Miliband said.

"A Tory government that looks out only for the few, or a Labour government that will stand up for working families in every part of our country," he claimed.

At the heart of the launch was a promise of a "double lock" to protect the health service.

Mr Miliband said Labour would act to ensure health services are not threatened by privatisation and pledged to provide £2.5bn in extra cash, paid for by taxes on expensive properties and tobacco companies and a crackdown on tax avoidance.

A new profit cap - usually 5% - would be imposed on outsourced healthcare contracts worth more than £500,000, private firms would be prevented from "cherry-picking" lucrative treatments and the NHS would be the "preferred provider" for all services.

Mr Miliband said: "Just think about how far backwards the NHS has gone in the last five years.

"People waiting longer and longer to see a GP. Ambulances queuing up outside hospitals, because A&E is full. Even a treatment tent erected in a hospital car park.

"For all the promises, for all the air-brushed posters, David Cameron has broken his solemn vow to the British people when it comes to our NHS."

He admitted the race for Downing Street would be neck-and-neck and could "come down to the wire".

Mr Miliband said: "I know our opponents will throw everything they have our way, because they're desperate to hang on to power.

"But we know we can win this fight on behalf of the British people."

Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy has also launched the party's campaign in Glasgow.

Addressing activists, Mr Murphy called on them to help Labour "consign David Cameron and his austerity to the dustbin of history".

In response to Mr Miliband's remarks, Conservative MP and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "We can only have a strong NHS if we have a strong economy, but Ed Miliband doesn't have an economic plan.

"We all know Labour want to 'weaponise' the NHS but this is another policy from Ed Miliband that looks ill-thought through. It risks higher infection rates, higher waiting times and chaos for our NHS.

"This incompetence is exactly why Ed Miliband is simply not up to the job."

Kidnapper Hunted After Young Girl Snatched

A man who allegedly abducted a six-year-old girl in Burnley is being hunted by police.

The six-year-old was taken by the man, who was possibly in a large dark-coloured car, from Nairne Street at around 4pm on Thursday.

She was later dropped off around four miles away in Whitefield Street, Hapton, where she was found and taken home before police were alerted.

Sky News understands she was missing for around 30 minutes.

The suspect police want to trace is described as being white, in his 40s, with a tanned complexion and bald.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area to reassure the local community.

Specialist officers are supporting the young victim and her family.

Detective Chief Inspector Joanne McHugh said: "This investigation is very much in its early stages and we are determined to find out exactly what has happened to this young child and to catch the man who has done this.

"We have a team of detectives who are on with various lines of inquiry and will be speaking to people in the area, as well as looking for possible CCTV footage and forensic evidence. We will also be speaking to the victim.

"I would like to reassure the public that whilst incidents of this kind are rare, we have stepped up police patrols in the area.

"We have specially trained officers offering support to this young girl and her family at this time.

"I urge anyone who may have seen this vehicle, anything suspicious in the time leading up to the incident or indeed anyone with information about this incident to contact the police urgently."

Sky's Nick Martin said police had begun the process of talking to the young girl.

He said: "It's really important that police quickly establish exactly what happened.

"Critical will be a clear description of the man, the vehicle he was driving, where they drove, his accent and clothing and of course what happened during the 30 minutes she was missing.

"Officers will already be looking at CCTV from the area to see if cameras captured the abduction and from that they could identify the vehicle and registration plate.

"Police will also be trying to reassure the community and it's likely that extra officers will be put into the area to answer any questions that anxious parents may have."

Anyone with information can call Lancashire Police on 101 quoting incident reference 0916 of Thursday, 26 March, or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Speaker Survives Secret Ballot Vote 'Plot'

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 26 Maret 2015 | 22.11

Speaker John Bercow was close to tears as MPs voted against a Government move to force a secret ballot on his re-election.

House of Commons leader William Hague was accused of a "grubby" manoeuvring for forcing the secret ballot motion on to the paper last night for a vote on the final day of the 2010 Parliament.

The move has been widely interpreted as an attempt to remove Mr Bercow, who regularly admonishes the Prime Minister during heated debates.

And as Mr Bercow shouted "order" ahead of the vote someone could be heard shouting: "You won't be saying that in a month" from the Conservative benches.

Scenes in the Commons as MPs debated the motion were emotional and Mr Bercow appeared to be close to tears as it was announced the Government had lost the vote by 228 to 202.

More than 20 Conservative MPs voted against the Government to defeat Mr Hague.

He gave a withering look towards the Conservatives benches but was rewarded with shouts of "pathetic" and "resign".

Mr Hague was fiercely criticised by both sides of the house with Labour's Gerald Kaufman saying he had "now descended to squalor".

Conservative MP Charles Walker said he had been "played as a fool" by Mr Hague.

Labour MPs rose to their feet and applauded in extraordinary scenes on the last day of Parliament before the election campaign begins in earnest.

Mr Hague's proposal would have meant if any MP had complained about his return to the role after the General Election then there could have been a secret ballot.

Mr Bercow has been a divisive figure since he took over the role in 2009. He has introduced a number of changes in parliament, including a nursery, and has been vocal in his fight for better female representation in the House of Commons.

He has also sharply criticised the "Punch and Judy" politics of Prime Minister's Questions, suggesting alternative formats for the bruising, weekly sessions.

Shadow Commons leader Angela Eagle, to whom David Cameron once addressed his "calm down dear" comment, said the Government had made a "cynical attempt to bring the speakership into play to use it as a bargaining chip in coalition negotiations."

Conservative MP Julian Lewis read an email from Liberal Democrat Andrew George, who had been unable to attend the debate because his father died on Wednesday night.

He wrote: "I feel very frustrated and annoyed by this. In addition I can't be there. My father died last night and as you might expect I have other priorities today that I cannot alter.

"Had I been able to attend, I would object in the strongest terms to the way this is being done. I don't mind a motion being brought forward in an open and honest manner, but not in this underhand way."

More follows...

Miliband And Cameron Prepare For Live Showdown

By Joey Jones, Deputy Political Editor

David Cameron and Ed Miliband are preparing themselves for the first big media setpiece of the election campaign, as Sky and Channel 4 jointly present Cameron & Miliband Live: The Battle For Number 10.

The programme, which starts at 9pm tonight, is part traditional interview and part questioning by a studio audience.

After winning a coin toss, Mr Miliband has elected to appear after the Prime Minister.

:: Click here for all the latest from Sky News on Election 2015

The programme will begin with Mr Cameron being interviewed by Jeremy Paxman and then responding to questions from members of the public, moderated by Kay Burley.

Mr Miliband will then face the studio audience before his interview with Paxman ends the programme.

The event follows many months of tortuous negotiations.

The decision to stage it just before the campaign proper begins is welcome as far as Downing Street is concerned - the Prime Minister has made plain his unease with debates within the campaign period.

It also differs significantly from the initial proposal for a head-to-head debate between the two men - a format the Prime Minister effectively vetoed.

Nevertheless both leaders will be well aware of the need to be on their mettle.

Not only do the two presenters enjoy a well-deserved reputation for tenacity, any gaffes could be particularly costly.

The latest polls reinforce the fact that there is no room for error.

According to a Sky News projection for the House of Commons, the Conservatives would manage 278 seats, with Labour on 279.

Both parties would, in this scenario, remain well short of an overall majority.

Mr Miliband will also be under increased pressure to perform well after a lacklustre showing at the final Prime Minister's Questions of the parliament.

Public Parade For Richard III's Skeleton

The remains of King Richard III have been paraded through Leicestershire, more than 500 years after his death in battle.

A number of services and a procession have taken place ahead of the reinterment at Leicester Cathedral on Thursday.

The cortege, which started at Leicester University, transported the former monarch in a specially designed coffin.

It visited key locations associated with the King's last few days before his death at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

Public ceremonies and services were held in Dadlington, Sutton Cheney, Bosworth Battlefield and Market Bosworth before the coffin returned back to Leicester.

More than 600 people gathered along the university exit earlier today, with some bearing flags depicting Richard's royal standard.

As the cortege made its way through country lanes nearing the field of Bosworth, people stopped by the roadside to take pictures.

The remains later arrived back in Leicester at its old medieval boundary of Bow Bridge, before being taken around the city centre and onto the cathedral on top of a horse-drawn carriage.

The man who designed the coffin is a descendant of Richard III who helped identify his remains through DNA testing.

Charles' Black Spider Memos To Be Published

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Government's bid to keep letters written by the Prince of Wales to MPs hidden from the public.

The judgement is the latest step in a 10-year legal battle to establish what Charles has written to politicians and whether, in the process, he has overstepped the mark of political neutrality.

The 27 notes, written in 2004 and 2005, have become known as the "black spider memos" because of the Prince's sprawling handwriting and abundant use of underlining and exclamation marks.

The battle to make them public began when Guardian journalist Rob Evans applied to see a number of written communications between Charles and various government ministers between September 2004 and April 2005.

Last year, judges at the Court of Appeal ruled the Attorney General, then Dominic Grieve, on behalf of the Government, had "no good reason" to stop the letters from being released.

In a final attempt to prevent their publication, the Government turned to the Supreme Court to ask it to overturn that ruling.

But the court's president Lord Neuberger said there was a "fundamental composite principle" behind its reasons for dismissing the appeal.

He announced: "That principle is that a decision of a judicial body should be final and binding and should not be capable of being overturned by a member of the executive."

Responding to the Supreme Court's decision, Clarence House said it was "a matter for the Government" but they were "disappointed the principle of privacy had not been upheld".

It is unclear what the letters are about but they were written to seven departments, including the Cabinet Office and, according to Mr Grieve, the letters reflect the Prince's "most deeply held personal views and beliefs".

Prince Charles is well-known for "bombarding" ministers with letters attacking policy on topics from the environment and farming to complementary medicine and architecture, and he has always argued his campaigning is a catalyst for change.

But some believe he goes too far and strays into party-political matters, and that the letters could damage his role as future monarch.

The Prime Minister described the ruling as disappointing and said the Government would now consider how to release the letters.

"This is about the principle that senior members of the Royal Family are able to express their views to government confidentially," David Cameron said.

"I think most people would agree this is fair enough.

"Our FOI laws specifically include the option of a governmental veto, which we exercised in this case for a reason.

"If the legislation does not make Parliament's intentions for the veto clear enough, then we will need to make it clearer."

The editor-in-chief of the Guardian said the ruling marked "a good day for transparency in government".

Alan Rusbridger added: "The Government wasted hundreds of thousands of pounds trying to cover up these letters, admitting their publication would 'seriously damage' perceptions of the Prince's political neutrality.

"Now they must publish them so that the public can make their own judgement."

Clarkson 'Fracas' Witnesses Quizzed By Police

North Yorkshire Police says it has spoken to some potential witnesses over the Jeremy Clarkson incident in a county hotel.

The force said it had "a duty to investigate where we believe an offence might have been committed".

Earlier this month Clarkson, 54, was involved in an "unprovoked physical and verbal attack" that left Top Gear Oisin Tymon with swelling and a split lip.

On Wednesday the BBC announced that it would not be renewing his Top Gear contract.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said it had been contacted by "concerned members of the public" who wanted to know what action the police are taking, if any.

"No-one who was present at the hotel during the incident came forward to report an offence to the police. Nonetheless, we have a duty to investigate where we believe an offence might have been committed, and that is what we have been doing with this case.

"We have already spoken to some people who were in the hotel at the time, but there are still others we need to speak to, who could help us to determine exactly what happened.

"Also, as is usual in these circumstances, we have made contact with Mr Tymon through his lawyers, to ask him to speak to us so we can ascertain how he wishes to pursue this matter."

On Wednesday the force said it was working with the BBC to see if any action needs to be taken against the presenter.

Clarkson faces an uncertain future as reports suggest his co-stars may leave the show alongside him.

He did not stop to answer reporters' questions on Thursday, but when asked what he would like to say to fans who may be upset about him leaving the show, he said: "Everybody's upset."

Germanwings Air Crash: Three Britons Killed

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 25 Maret 2015 | 22.11

At least three Britons were among the 150 people killed when a passenger jet crashed in the French Alps, the Prime Minister has confirmed.

One of the British victims has been named as 50-year-old businessman Martyn Matthews, from Wolverhampton.

The father-of-two grown-up children is thought to have been travelling to Germany for a business meeting.

Paul Andrew Bramley, 28, originally from Hull who was studying hospitality in Lucerne, was also a passenger on the fateful flight.

His mother Carol said: "Paul was a kind, caring and loving son. He was the best son, he was my world."

Pawel Pracz, whose wife Marina Bandres Lopez-Belio and seven-month-old son Julian Pracz-Bandres died in the crash, said he was "devastated".

Mr Pracz, who lived with his family in Manchester, said his wife had been in Spain for a funeral and had only bought tickets "at the last moment".

Speaking at the last Prime Minister's Questions, David Cameron offered his "deepest condolences" to the families of those who died in the disaster, and said the UK stood ready to offer any assistance it could.

He told the Commons: "It is heart-breaking to hear about the schoolchildren, the babies, the families whose lives have been brought to an end.

"The Foreign Office is working urgently to establish whether any further British nationals were among those on board."

Mr Cameron was speaking as recovery teams resumed their search at the crash site in hazardous terrain.

Overnight rain and snow at the crash site has made the rocky ravine slippery, increasing problems in reaching the area.

Investigators are also examining the black box voice recorder of the doomed Germanwings aircraft in the hunt for clues as to what caused the Airbus A320 to come down without issuing a mayday message.

The French authorities said although the black box had been damaged, it is thought to be "useable".

Although officials insist no cause has been ruled out, terrorism is not considered likely.

Victims Angry At Blood Inquiry 'Whitewash'

HIV and hepatitis C sufferers and their relatives have reacted angrily following the publication of a report investigating how they were infected with contaminated blood.

The Penrose report followed a public inquiry set up by the Scottish government after hundreds of people - many of whom were haemophiliacs - were given infected blood by the NHS during the 1970s and 1980s.

A statement from Lord Penrose - who was not present because he is seriously ill - was read out by the inquiry secretary, Maria McCann, after which several attendees called out "whitewash" to show their disapproval of the findings.

Victim Bruce Norval, who explained he was involved throughout the whole process, had read the report in total as well as every piece of evidence, said the report was "a piece of nonsense".

He went on: "It does not match the evidence, it does not match the charges. It doesn't address the main issues. It degrades patient opinion against medical opinion despite the fact that doctors very clearly have more to lose through an adverse report than we do.

"Their opinion in the form of hearsay, ie: 'We told patients that they were getting hepatitis' was taken over the idea that thousands of UK patients have said: 'No we weren't'."

The statement read on Lord Penrose's behalf said: "For people infected by HIV/Aids and/or hepatitis C, the impact on their lives and the lives of their loved ones has often been devastating.

"I would also comment on the often forgotten suffering of clinical staff, who discovered that the treatments they thought were beneficial to patients actually caused them to become infected with life-threatening conditions.

"They too have been affected, especially when accused of knowing or deliberate attempts to harm patients."

The sole recommendation from Lord Penrose's report was that people who had blood transfusions in the 1970s and 1980s and before 1991 should be tested for hepatitis C.

The Prime Minister, speaking at the last Prime Minister's Questions before the General Election, apologised, saying: "To each and every one of those people I would like to say sorry on behalf of the Government for something that should not have happened.

"While it will be for the next government to take account of these findings, it is right that we use this moment to recognise the pain and the suffering experienced by people as a result of this tragedy.

"It is difficult to imagine the feelings of unfairness that people must feel at being infected with hepatitis C and HIV as a result of a totally unrelated treatment within the NHS."

Scotland's Health Secretary Shona Robison later apologised on behalf of the NHS and her government.

The inquiry only looked at those in Scotland who had been infected.

Thousands more people in England and Wales were also infected at the time.

Church Appoints Its Second Woman Bishop

The new Bishop of Hull is to be the Reverend Canon Alison White.

Only the second woman to be named as a bishop, the Rev Canon White is currently priest-in-charge of Riding Mill in the Diocese of Newcastle.

Announcing the news, the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu said: "This is a joyous day! I am delighted to be welcoming Alison as the next Bishop of Hull.

"Whilst she will be working with others across the Diocese of York encouraging faith in urban life, she will have particular responsibilities for the vibrant city of Hull and the glorious coastline and countryside of the East Riding.

"Alison is a person of real godliness and wisdom - it is fantastic that she has accepted God's call to make Christ visible together with all of us in this Diocese of York."

The Rev Canon White said: "In 2010, I was privileged to be invited to take part in the York Diocesan Clergy Conference where I got a profound sense of a Diocese with faith and hope.

"I know that there is a real vision to be generous churches making and nurturing disciples and can't wait to be part of loving God and growing the Church in this great part of Yorkshire."

The new bishop, who became a priest in 1994, is married to Bishop Frank White, assistant bishop of Newcastle.

She will be consecrated on 3 July at York Minister.

The Church of England named its first woman bishop last July.

The Rev Libby Lane was consecrated as the eighth Bishop of Stockport at York Minster in January.

Salmond Reveals Plans To 'Lock Out' Tories

By Anushka Asthana, Political Correspondent

Alex Salmond has said that the Scottish National Party will attempt to "lock" David Cameron out of Downing Street if the Conservatives try to form a minority Government after the General Election.

Scotland's former First Minister, who hopes to be an MP himself, said his party would vote as a block against Tory policy in a bid to trigger a vote of no confidence.

Critics accused him of trying to sabotage the will of the British public - should the Conservatives be the largest party on 8 May.

The comments come as Mr Cameron and Labour leader Ed Miliband clashed for the final Prime Minister's Questions of this Parliament.

The intervention is significant because the two biggest parties are now neck-and-neck in the polls, meaning neither is on track for a majority.

In that situation, they would be heavily reliant on other parties to get votes through Parliament. But the SNP - whose own surge in the polls could leave them with 50 MPs compared with just six now - have long been hostile to the Conservative party.

"The Tories would have to go straight effectively for a vote of confidence, usually the Queen's Speech, although it could be otherwise, and we'd be voting against it," Mr Salmond told the New Statesman magazine.

"So if Labour joins us in that pledge, then that's Cameron locked out."

That would then trigger a vote of no confidence and give Labour two weeks to try to form a Government.

Mr Salmond's interview took place over a fish and chip lunch, at which he ordered a bottle of pink champagne to celebrate the publication of his new book about the referendum campaign: The Dream Shall Never Die.

During the interview, Mr Salmond also revealed that Nelson Mandela was the historical figure with whom he most identified.

The Conservatives hit back at the SNP figure last night, with deputy chair Bob Neill describing it as a "sinister threat".

Labour may not find it helpful either.

Its leader in Scotland, Jim Murphy, who is giving a speech later today, has warned that votes for the SNP can only serve to weaken Labour's position overall, making them less likely to win the election.
