Missing Manics Star's Family Reveal Pain

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 31 Januari 2015 | 22.11

The family of Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richey Edwards have spoken of their pain at still not having closure 20 years on from his disappearance.

The lyricist had been due to depart for a US tour on 1 February 1995 when he checked out of a London hotel never to be seen again.

His sister, Rachel Elias, has revealed how the family's agony became even more pronounced with the passing of her father Graham two years ago.

"It was difficult because he had to face up to that realisation - that we all may have to - we may not find out what happened to Richard," she said.

"It is very different. When someone dies… you can go to a crematorium, graveyard or place where you have scattered their ashes and remember.

"But when someone goes missing you are left with this ongoing uncertainty. Not knowing makes it worse.

"What you end up being left with is your imagination and you can construct everything in that."

Though his car was found abandoned at a motorway service station two weeks after his disappearance, no trace of Edwards has been found.

The musician suffered from mental health problems in the years preceding his disappearance.

Mrs Elias, who is part of The Missing People Rock Choir who have released a fundraising single called I Miss You, said: "People said all sorts of things in the initial stages - that he was hiding out at a fan's house or that we knew where he was. It was just totally fabricated.

"That hampered the police's involvement, they had to explore statements like that rather than just be focused on the investigation.

"Also he was noted as a vulnerable adult on his missing person's file - because he had a recent hospital admission and prescribed anti-depressants.

"In retrospect, there wasn't that much active searching done. They would follow up leads if people contacted them, but they didn't actively try to find him.

"One officer even said he had a right to go missing. It was incredibly hurtful."

Mrs Elias, a mental health support worker, has campaigned with families of other missing people.

"Things have definitely improved," she said. "People have family liaison officers now and improvements have also been made in the way the police communicate with families of missing people."

'Dramatic Rise' In Liver Disease Deaths

Deaths from liver disease have increased 400% in the last 40 years, according to the British Liver Trust, which is calling for screening to help combat the problem.

The organisation is warning that costs from the disease could rise above £1bn a year unless action is taken.

It has launched its fourth annual Love Your Liver campaign with a call for the Government to back universal liver health screening in primary care and a national liver health prevention campaign.

Andrew Langford, chief executive of the British Liver Trust, said: "The average age of death from liver disease is 57, that's over 20 years lower than deaths from cancer, stroke and heart disease - liver disease is now the third most common cause of premature death.

"Most people think that a glass of wine or pint of beer a night or a couple of takeaways a week won't do much harm - when in fact drinking even just a bit too much alcohol every day and eating unhealthy food are major contributing factors for liver damage.

"We are all affected differently and the symptoms are almost undetectable in many cases until it is too late."

The trust says advanced liver disease is a "ticking time bomb the government cannot afford to ignore".

More investment into early diagnosis could save the NHS as much as £600m, it claims, and Mr Langford added this could also save more than one million lives.

Liver specialist Dr Jude Oben told Sky News screening would "make a huge difference".

He said: "If 30% of the UK population is obese, how many of those patients are having their livers tested for the presence of liver disease?"

The British Liver Trust has an online screening tool that acts as an early warning system.

It takes five minutes to complete and helps people to understand if they are in danger of liver damage.

Call For Tasers For All Police To Tackle Terror

Frontline police officers should be able to carry a Taser to combat attempted attacks on them by terrorists, according to the head of the organisation that represents them.

Police Federation chair Steve White said the stun guns, which can temporarily disable the target with two dart-like electrodes that carry a maximum 50,000-volt charge, should be made more widely available to uniformed officers.

He told The Guardian newspaper the move was needed because acts of terrorism could be carried out anywhere and officers needed protection.

Mr White said: "The terrorist ideal to get attention no longer relies on an attack being in a place of note.

"It could be in Cheam high street, in any town, in any part of the UK.

"We know there are more dangerous people out there, preparing to attack police officers and we need to be able to respond to that threat."

Leaders at the Police Federation will vote next month on a proposal that every officer on the frontline should be offered training in how to use the weapons.

Mr White said: "Talking to them with a cup of tea and a biscuit is not going to work."

The murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby in Woolwich in 2013 showed "you don't need to have a gun to create terrorism", said Mr White, who rejected the notion the move amounted to arming officers.

"It is a defensive tool and a tactical option.

"We have a largely unarmed service and the service wants that to remain.

"The alternative is to have officers out there without anything at all. We have to do something."

But one police chief, speaking anonymously, told The Guardian the idea risked damaging public confidence in the police.

"The idea of arming every police officer with a Taser is alien to 200 years of police culture," they said.

The most common device used by police is the X26 Taser, which has a peak voltage of 50,000 volts when discharged - this drops to 1,200 volts while travelling around the body

The Taser fires two small dart-like electrodes which stay connected to the main unit as they are propelled by small compressed nitrogen charges to the body similar to air gun or paintball marker propellants

Arctic Blast After 'Thundersnow' Storms

A fierce Arctic blast will sweep across Britain this weekend bringing more snow and freezing temperatures, forecasters say.

A Level 3, or severe weather warning, has been issued across the North and West of England lasting until next Thursday.

Sky weather producer Rebecca Yussuf says today's wind chill will "make it feel sub-zero in many places".

"Most places will have a cold and frosty start to Saturday, with icy stretches on untreated surfaces," she said.

"Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic will see frequent, blustery sleet and snow showers through the morning.

"The heaviest snowfalls are expected across northern Scotland, where fresh accumulations are likely.

"Further south, it will be largely dry, but west Wales, south-west England and East Anglia will see a few wintry showers develop. Any snow that falls there is likely to be only temporary and melt quickly."

Yussuf added: "It will be cold everywhere, with temperatures peaking between 4C and 7C, but the wind chill will make it feel sub-zero in many places."

Viral Campaign Raises £100K For Mugging Victim

Donations for a disabled pensioner who was mugged outside his home have reached more than £100,000.

After reading about the mugging of 67-year-old Alan Barnes, beautician Katie Cutler set up an online fundraising page that went viral and has raised more than 200 times its original £500 target in just two days.

Mr Barnes, who has disabilities from birth after his mother contracted German measles when she was pregnant, broke his collarbone when he was pushed over by his attacker.

People were moved to help after hearing that Mr Barnes was too afraid to return to his home in Low Fell, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

Following reports of the attack, which police described as "disgraceful", Ms Cutler set up the Help Alan Barnes online donation page on the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe.

She wrote: "I was so upset that anyone could target a disabled pensioner and be so cruel.

"We can't take away what has happened but with a little donation we can make the future a prettier one and help towards the cost of his new home. Thank you all."

One online contributor, Lorraine Susan, said: "I really hope this fund helps him get settled somewhere nice & safe.

"At least he knows there are literally thousands on his side."

Mr Barnes is a well-known figure in Low Fell and is renowned for being able to quickly calculate how many days old someone is from their date of birth.

'Thundersnow' Storms As Icy Blast Hits UK

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 29 Januari 2015 | 22.11

Parts of England are being battered by "thundersnow" storms as the winter weather continues to bite across Britain.

There were 130 schools closed in Scotland and a similar number in Northern Ireland. More than 40 were closed in Cumbria, 38 in Lancashire and 28 in Tameside, Greater Manchester.

Main roads in Durham, Yorkshire and north Wales are among those closed because of the weather and more than a dozen rail services between Manchester and York have been cancelled, as northern England is hit by the storms this morning.

Phil Verster, route managing director for Network Rail, advised train passengers to check before they travel.

Flights to and from Manchester Airport were suspended this morning, although the airport re-opened around 1.30pm. Flights are likely to be delayed but passengers have been told to check with their airline before coming to the airport.

The Met Office said the disruption was caused in part by "thundersnow storms" north of Manchester. These are thunderstorms with snow instead of rain.

Sky News forecaster Isobel Lang said conditions would improve a little this evening but snow and strong winds would still make driving dangerous and travelling a challenge in some parts.

She added: "During this evening and tonight the showers will ease, it will turn slightly less cold, with the showers turning more to sleet or rain later. It may still be icy."

Cold blasts from Greenland and Iceland will cause temperatures to drop to around 2-3C (36-37F) in the North and 4-5C (39-41F) in the South. It will become slightly milder by Friday, reaching 7C (45F) in the South.

The Met Office has issued an amber "be prepared" warning for snow, which covers huge parts of Britain from Liverpool Bay to the Humber to the western side of the Welsh mountains.

The snow was deepest in Scotland, with 23cm at Tulloch Bridge in Inverness-shire. Elsewhere, there was 21cm at Glenanne in Armagh and 13cm in Spadeadam in Cumbria.

Darron Burness, head of the AA's severe weather team, said motorists should prepare by clearing snow and ice from car windows, lights and the roof before driving.

New Guidance For Rules On Rape Accusations

People accused of rape will increasingly be expected to prove they obtained consent for sex under new guidelines issued to police and prosecutors.

The move comes as a police chiefs warn there is too much variation in how forces deal with rape allegations, after figures revealed a 22% increase in the reporting of sexual offences.

But the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that even if suspects can prove consent was obtained, it should be questioned if they held a position of power over the potential victim.

Consent should also be examined if rape allegations follow situations where the claimant was under the influence of alcohol or drugs or financially or otherwise dependent upon their alleged rapist.

Speaking at the first national CPS-Police rape conference on Wednesday, Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Saunders said societal thinking on rape was confused and needed to be challenged.

"For too long society has blamed rape victims for confusing the issue of consent - by drinking or dressing provocatively for example," she said.

"But it is not they who are confused, it is society itself and we must challenge that. Consent to sexual activity is not a grey area - in law it is clearly defined and must be given fully and freely.

"It is not a crime to drink, but it is a crime for a rapist to target someone who is no longer capable of consenting to sex though drink.

"These tools take us well beyond the old saying 'no means no' - it is now well established that many rape victims freeze rather than fight as a protective and coping mechanism.

"We want police and prosecutors to make sure they ask in every case where consent is the issue - how did the suspect know the complainant was saying yes and doing so freely and knowingly?"

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Martin Hewitt, the Association of Chief Police Officers lead on adult sex offences, said victims needed reassurance they would be treated fairly.

"As report after report has shown, there is still far too much variation in the way that forces move a complaint of rape through the system," he said.

"Reporting of sexual offences is up 22% in the latest statistics because of increased confidence in our service and recording but we have further to go.

"We need to tackle the iconic issues of 'no further action' and, particularly, 'no crimes' head on and reduce inconsistencies in our processes so that we can send a clear and unequivocal message to victims about how they will be treated."

Andy Murray Reaches Australian Open Final

Andy Murray is through to the final of the Australian Open after beating Tomas Berdych in four sets.

The British number one lost the first set against the seventh-seed Czech, but came back to triumph 6-7 (6-8), 6-0, 6-3, 7-5.

It is the first time Murray has made it to the final of a Grand Slam tournament since he won Wimbledon in 2013.

He will play either Novak Djokovic or Stan Wawrinka in Sunday's decider.

The world number six was too strong for Berdych, who failed to match his performance as he beat Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals.

After losing a marathon 76-minute opening set in a tiebreaker, Murray finished strongly to clinch the match in 3 hours and 26 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

There had been much focus ahead of the match on Berdych's decision to hire former Murray team member Dani Vallverdu as his coach.

And the match saw some flashes of anger from both players and a few glares at each other at changeovers during the opening set.

"Yeah, there was a little bit of extra tension," Murray said in an on-court interview.

"It's a big match. A lot was made of Dani working with him.

"Me and Dani have been friends since we were 15 and I felt that was a little bit unfair and unnecessary. There is more to life than sport.

"I was disappointed to lose the opening set after I had a couple of chances at the end but I felt I was playing better as the set went on and I was very aggressive at the beginning of the second set.

"I got more comfortable with the conditions and with Tomas' ball, in the beginning I was feeling quite rushed and then I got more aggressive and made him do more running."

Murray was cheered on throughout the game by fiancee Kim Sears, who sat alongside the 27-year-old's coaching team.

He also launched a staunch defence of his coach Amelie Mauresmo, whose arrival last year was thought to have caused disagreement in his camp. Vallverdu and fitness trainer Jez Green subsequently left in November.

"A lot of people criticised me for working with her and I think so far this week we have showed women can be very good coaches as well," Murray said.

"Madison Keys, who reached the semi-finals here, is also coached by a woman in Lindsay Davenport and I see no reason why that can't keep moving forward so I am very thankful to Amelie for doing it.

"I would say it was a brave choice from her and hopefully I can repay her in a few days."

Police Search Lake For Missing Mother Of Four

Police trying to find a mother of four who has been missing for a week have been searching areas of woodland and water.

Samantha Henderson, 25, of Halves Cottages in Corfe Castle, Dorest, was reported missing on the morning of 22 January.

Ms Henderson - whose children are aged six, four, two and one - was last seen outside Corfe Castle Primary School around 3pm on 21 January.

Police have been searching an area near Corfe Castle and extra officers have been deployed to comb woodland and water in the Lake Pier and South Haven Close areas of Hamworthy.

Ms Henderson's partner Dominic Isom, 27, has been accused of her murder and appeared at Bournemouth Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Senior investigating officer Neil Devoto, of Dorset Police, said: "As part of our investigation, officers are today carrying out intelligence-led detailed searches in the Hamworthy area.

"I would like to hear from anyone who saw Samantha's blue Peugeot 307 estate, registration HV04 ZFM, being driven in the Lake Pier and South Haven Close areas between 3pm on Wednesday 21 January and 5pm on Friday 23 January," he said.

"It is crucial we find Samantha and your information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, could help us.

"It is important to stress we have not moved away from the original search area off the A351, which still remains important to the investigation.

"We have dedicated officers working in the search areas and it is important these searches are carried out by trained professionals so potential evidence is not jeopardised.

"As such, I would request that members of the public do not assist us at this time. If the point comes when the public can help, we will of course be in touch."

Isom, of Halves Cottages, Corfe Castle, will appear at Winchester Crown Court on 30 January.

:: Dorset Police can be contacted on telephone number 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Tesco Closures: Is Your Local Store To Go?

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 28 Januari 2015 | 22.11

Tesco has revealed the locations of the 43 stores it is planning to close, placing 2,000 jobs at risk.

The supermarket chain, which has suffered a string of problems including falling sales and a £263m profits overstatement, announced the closures last month as it moved to save costs.

It has now confirmed the impact of the decision, with seven superstores and six Homeplus outlets among the sites to be shut.

The majority were either Express or Metro convenience operations.

Chief Executive Dave Lewis, who is currently running the UK business, said: "In January I announced that our performance as a business has fallen significantly short of where we would want it to be and that to protect the future of the business in the UK we would close 43 unprofitable stores.

"The decision to close the stores has been exceptionally difficult to take.  I recognise it will affect many hard-working colleagues, our customers and local communities.

"Our priority is to explain what this announcement means for our colleagues and wherever possible, offer them alternative roles with Tesco.

"We will continue to serve our customers through other local stores and our dotcom service."

In addition to the shutting of shops, the group also previously announced it would shelve plans for 49 new UK stores.

They included its £22m Chatteris store in Cambridgeshire which had been earmarked to open its doors to customers two months ago.

Tesco has not been alone in efforts to save costs.

A supermarket price war - mostly driven by the challenge from hard discount chains Aldi and Lidl - has taken its toll on other major supermarket companies.

Sainsbury's has cut jobs while Morrisons' chief executive Dalton Philips paid the price for a woeful Christmas when his departure from the business was confirmed earlier this month.

More Pregnant Smokers Quit If Paid - Study

Pregnant women who smoke are more likely to quit the habit if they are paid, according to new research.

Figures suggest 5,000 fetuses and babies die every year as a result of mums smoking during pregnancy.

And it is claimed it can cost the NHS annually up to £64m for problems in mothers and up to £23.5m for infants.

But a new study suggests financial incentives, in the form of shopping vouchers, can motivate pregnant women to quit the habit.

"This study provides substantial evidence of a very promising and potentially cost-effective new intervention to add to present health service support," the authors wrote.

"The findings can serve as the basis for future research to include other UK centres and other health care systems."

Researchers at the University of Glasgow and the University of Stirling used 612 pregnant smokers.

They were randomly assigned to one of two groups.

Half were assigned to a group offered up to £400 of financial incentives if they took part in sessions aimed at helping them quit or actually gave up.

The other half were just offered places on help groups and a face-to-face appointment with a smoking cessation adviser, four follow-up support calls and free nicotine replacement therapy for 10 weeks.

Women who were offered shopping vouchers were significantly more likely to quit smoking (23%) than those in the control group (9%).

Murder Victim's Family Loses Court Battle

A family has lost its Supreme Court bid for the right to sue police for negligence over the death of a young mother.

Joanna Michael was killed by her ex-boyfriend who was in "a mad fit of jealous rage" despite dialling 999 twice.

"Individual and systemic failures" by police in Cardiff meant the emergency services arrived too late to save the 25-year-old's life.

Her family asked the highest court in the land to overturn an appeal court ruling from 2012 that the police have an "immunity" from being sued for negligence under common law for the actions of officers during "the investigation or suppression of crime".

However, the justices decided by a 5-2 majority that the ruling was correct and dismissed the family's appeal.

Nicholas Bowen QC, appearing for Ms Michael's family, told the court the case was "desperately important".

"There is a need for a heightened accountability of the police in the light of recent scandals and investigations which have had a very serious detrimental effect on public and political confidence in police services."

He also described to the court how Ms Michaels was killed by ex-boyfriend Cyron Williams in August 2009.

The court heard Williams broke into her home "in a mad fit of jealous rage after he discovered she was in a new relationship some weeks after they had finished seeing each other".

He is now serving life with a 20-year tariff, meaning he will be behind bars until at least 2030.

Ms Michaels made her first call at 2.29am on August 5 and told Gwent Police operator that Williams had turned up at her house and found her with someone else.

He had bitten her ear, taken the other man away in his car, and told her he would return to kill her.

The call went through to Gwent - "the wrong police force" instead of South Wales police - and was wrongly graded less seriously than it should have been.

A further 999 call was received by Gwent Police from Ms Michael at 2.43am and she could be heard screaming before the line went dead.

When police officers arrived they found Ms Michael had been stabbed 72 times.

Police claimed immunity from being sued by relying on the 1989 case of Hill v Chief Constable of West Yorkshire, the "Yorkshire Ripper" case.

Peer Apologises For Trident 'Nazi' Comment

Welsh peer Lord Wigley has apologised after comparing the effects of a Trident submarine base to a Nazi death camp.

Asked to comment on the benefits of moving the nuclear weapons system from Scotland to Wales, the former Plaid Cymru leader said: "No doubt there were many jobs provided in Auschwitz but that didn't justify their existence and neither does nuclear weapons justify having them in Pembrokeshire."

Challenged about making the comparison, he replied: "The number of people that will be killed by Trident will be infinitely more."

He issued a statement a short time ago saying: "I am certainly sorry if my remarks were open to any misinterpretation and I apologise for any offence that has been caused."

He added: "The point I was trying to make was that you can't have jobs at any cost and I reiterate that."

Former Welsh Secretary David Jones branded the apology as 'mealy-mouthed'.

"Nothing that ever happens in this country could ever be as appalling as what the Nazis did. But to say it at Holocaust memorial time is even worse," he added.

Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman said there were 'no plans whatsoever' to relocate Trident.

Prankster Told PM: 'It Is A Hoax Call'

Written By Unknown on Senin, 26 Januari 2015 | 22.11

David Cameron has said "no national security was breached" when he received a hoax call from a prankster.

Security procedures are under review after the call to Downing Street was put through to the Prime Minister and an earlier call where the mobile phone number of the boss of GCHQ was was given out.

Mr Cameron ended the call when it became clear it was a prank, and Downing Street said no sensitive information was disclosed.

Speaking in Southampton, the Prime Minister told how he took the call while out for a family walk in his Witney, Oxfordshire, constituency.

"I had Florence on my back to add to the exercise regime that I'm undertaking, my Blackberry went in my pocket, I answered it and it claimed to be a conference call established, which I do obviously very frequently, between the head of GCHQ and some of the staff in my office.

"A voice came through, a voice I didn't recognise, the voice said that he was sorry to wake me up - which I thought was strange as it was 11 o'clock in the morning and so I quite rapidly asked 'who is this?' to which the answer came 'it is a hoax call,' and so I pushed the red button on my Blackberry, which ended the call.

"So no harm was done, no national security was breached, but it is important when these things happen to make sure we do everything we can to put in place systems to weed out hoax calls.

"But every now and again, I suspect these things will happen."

Investigations into the breach are under way at both Number 10 and GCHQ, where a mobile phone number for director Robert Hannigan was revealed to the caller.

A Government spokesman said: "Following two hoax calls to Government departments today, a notice has gone out to all departments to be on the alert for such calls.

"In the first instance, a call was made to GCHQ which resulted in the disclosure of a mobile phone number for the director.

"The mobile phone number provided is never used for calls involving classified information.

"In the second instance, a hoax caller claiming to be the GCHQ director was connected to the Prime Minister.

"Both GCHQ and Number 10 take security seriously and both are currently reviewing procedures following these hoax calls to ensure that the Government learns any lessons from this incident."

It is not known if the same person was behind both hoaxes, but a man claiming responsibility for the call to GCHQ described his actions to The Sun newspaper.

He claimed he was high on drink and drugs at the time and said the situation was "hilarious".

"I've just made complete monkeys out of GCHQ. I've got the mobile number of the director," he told the paper.

"What's more, I am off my face on booze and cocaine."

He added: "I'm definitely going to do it again. It was so easy."

The paper reported that the man telephoned Mr Hannigan claiming to be an ITN journalist, but said the director was suspicious and ended the call.

The mobile phone number for Mr Hannigan is understood to be for an unclassified phone, rather than one of the secure lines used for sensitive communications.

Double Murder Suspect Found Dead In Prison Cell

A man accused of killing two pensioners has been found dead in his prison cell while on trial for the murders.

Leo Barnes, from Balsall Heath, Birmingham, was standing trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court accused of killing Cynthia Beamond, 80, and Philip Silverstone, 67.

Barnes was due to be cross-examined on Friday but had complained of feeling ill.

He was found hanging in his cell at HMP Hewell in Redditch on Sunday morning.

Giving evidence in his defence on Thursday, Barnes told jurors he witnessed assaults on his alleged victims, but denied attacking Mrs Beamond with a saucepan and killing 67-year-old Mr Silverstone with a jack from a hire car.

The 33-year-old said they had died at the hands of an intruder and a Polish man who went "absolutely wild" after a sexual encounter.

The self-confessed cocaine dealer insisted that Mrs Beamond, whom he knew from childhood, was still alive when he left her house before driving to Mr Silverstone's flat in London the next day.

The victim's daughter said the family and her mother had been denied justice.

Beverley Hadley said: "We are devastated as a family that the man we believe is responsible for the brutal murder of my beloved Mum is not going to face justice for this horrendous crime.

"On Friday 27 June 2014 my life changed forever when my Mum and best friend went missing.

"Without Mum, every day of our lives is painful and empty.

"Every day I wake up thinking about her and believing that this whole nightmare is just a dream, but then the realisation hits me over and over again."

Police said an investigation will be held into Barnes' death but it is not regarded as suspicious.

Detective Inspector Caroline Corfield, who led the murder inquiry, said: "I am shocked to hear about the death of Leo Barnes, who was found dead in his cell at HMP Hewell by prison staff."

A Prison Service spokesman said: "As with all deaths in custody, the Independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for people to be aware of possible travel disruption.

Strong gusty winds are also expected and visibility may be reduced.

Search For Windsurfer Who Vanished In Fog

A search and rescue operation is under way after a windsurfer disappeared in foggy conditions off the Lancashire coast.

The 62-year-old man failed to return to shore after heading out with friends on Sunday afternoon.

Seven RNLI lifeboats were launched from Morecambe, Fleetwood and Blackpool - the last of which stood down at 3.30am.

The search, which includes coastguard teams and a police helicopter, resumed on Monday morning.

The windsurfer disappeared at the mouth of the River Lune.

Cameron: 'I Want To Take Part' In TV Debates

David Cameron has said he wants to take part in televised debates ahead of the General Election and progress has been made towards agreeing a format.

Speaking after a speech about tax and austerity in Southampton, the Prime Minister said: "I was told that it was appalling and outrageous that I had suggested you couldn't have one minor party without having the other minor party and I'm delighted the broadcasters have gone away and thought again.

He joked: "They've actually come up with rather more minor parties than I had in mind, but I'm sure they've thought it all through and they know what they're doing."

The Prime Minister suggested he would back the inclusion of the Democratic Unionist Party, which has eight MPs, more than three of the parties included in the latest proposals from broadcasters.

He said: "I don't quite see why Northern Ireland seems to be missing out because, as far as I'm concerned, it's as important a part of our United Kingdom as Wales or Scotland."

He added: "I want to take part - I said they needed to do the minor party thing and they've certainly done that... I want these debates to go ahead and that's good progress."

The Prime Minister was speaking after broadcasters put forward revised plans - and made clear the debates would go ahead without any party leaders who could not agree to the format.

Sky News, Channel 4, the BBC and ITV last week confirmed plans for a 7-7-2 format.

Two debates hosted by the BBC and ITV would feature the leaders of Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, UKIP, the Greens, Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru.

The third, on Channel 4 and Sky, would pit David Cameron against Ed Miliband in a head-to-head.

The proposed dates for the debates are April 2, 16 and 30.

Nigel Farage has condemned the plans, the Liberal Democrats want Nick Clegg to appear in all three debates and the Democratic Unionist Party has sharply criticised its omission from the list.

DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds told Sky's Murnaghan programme on Sunday: "Once you begin to involve regional parties, then you have to invite all regions of the UK to participate."

The Prime Minister also addressed Syriza's resounding election victory in Greece, saying it reinforced the need for governments to have "an economic plan that works".

Speaking in the key election battleground of Eastleigh - currently held by the Lib Dems - he insisted there was an economic, moral and practical case for tax cuts following the election.

But he did not spell out how the Conservatives would pay for a promised £7bn in income tax cuts.

Mr Cameron confirmed plans for a further £30bn in spending cuts if the Tories win a majority in May - including £13bn from Whitehall department spending and £12bn from welfare.

He said:  "After the security of a job, the next best thing we can do is to cut people's taxes and let them keep more of their own money to spend as they choose. That's our aim."
