Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says the club is ashamed of the supporters who racially abused a black man on the Paris Metro.
At a news conference on Friday, he apologised and said he would welcome the victim - Sylla Souleymane - to a future home game.
He said: "I'd like to make clear, on behalf of everyone at the club, our disgust at the incident. We were appalled by what we saw.
"The club would also like to apologise unreservedly to Souleymane for the behaviour of a small number of individuals and their unforgivable action towards him.
"We feel ashamed, but maybe we shouldn't because I refuse to be connected with these people.
"I'm connected with Chelsea, I'm connected with so many good things this club defends and represents.
"I left Chelsea in 2007 and I couldn't wait for the moment to be back, and it's not because of people like this."
Paris-born Mr Souleymane, 33, has said he thinks the fans who abused him should be jailed.
He told Le Parisien newspaper: "These people, these English fans, must be found, punished and must be locked up. What happened should not go unpunished."
The club said three people had been suspended from its Stamford Bridge ground and that they would be banned for life if there was "sufficient evidence of their involvement in the incident".
Chelsea said it had received "substantial information" following an appeal for witnesses and an investigation was ongoing.
Meanwhile, one of the Chelsea fans on board the train, Josh Parsons, appears to have been suspended by his employers.
The 21-year-old finance worker is not seen chanting and it is not clear whether he was involved.
