The UK's most senior woman police officer has quit Scotland Yard months after being moved from her role as the national counter-terrorism co-ordinator.

Cressida Dick, 54, was said to be shocked and upset when she was replaced in the high-profile job by a male colleague in May.

She had held the post for three years and oversaw the successful security operation around the London 2012 Olympics.

She is to join the Foreign Office, it is thought in a security role.

Assistant Commissioner Dick was believed to have fallen out with Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe over the recent recruitment of senior officers from regional forces.

A former colleague said: "Unlike most chief ranks she really cared about her officers.

"Rumour has it she was also unhappy at the ruthless nature of the Met's current regime."

Ms Dick could have retired this year, but applied for a two-year extension.

It was granted, but she was told she would have to move sideways to run the Yard's serious crime department.

She did not comment at the time, but supporters said she had been "ousted".

During her time in charge of counter-terror policing she was credited with changing its macho image and engaging with communities in a bid to tackle radicalisation.

Ms Dick said: "I first joined the Met in 1983 and have loved my time as a police officer in London.

"It has been a wonderful privilege to work in such an extraordinary organisation and with such fabulous people."

Sir Bernard said: "Cressida Dick has been a fantastic leader in the Metropolitan police and takes on some of the most difficult roles in policing.

"She is a role model for women across the service. We wish her well in the future."

In 2005, Ms Dick was in charge of the police surveillance operation around a suspect wrongly identified as one of the 21/7 would-be London bombers.

An innocent Brazilian electrician Jean Charles de Menezes was shot dead by police at Stockwell tube station.

The force was exonerated of blame at an inquest and no officer was prosecuted, but the force was later found guilty of breaching health and safety laws by endangering the public.

It was ordered to pay more than £500,000 in fines and costs.
