Lib Dems In Tax Cut Manifesto Pledge

People would be able to earn at least £12,500 before paying income tax under proposals included in the Liberal Democrats manifesto.

The move would mean those on the minimum wage of £6.50 an hour would not have to pay any income tax and it would be worth £400 each year to a basic rate taxpayer - helping around 30 million people.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said the personal allowance increase would come by the end of the next Parliament.

Lib Dems have been keen to make it clear they were the driving force behind the increase of the personal allowance from £10,00 to £10,500 in April 2015, which was announced in the Budget.

Mr Alexander said cutting income tax as a "top Liberal Democrat priority".

He said: "It was on the front page of the 2010 Liberal Democrat manifesto and we have fought to keep it on the agenda at every budget.

"By April next year we will have delivered a tax cut to over 26 million people worth £800 a year to a typical basic rate taxpayer and taken over three million out of tax altogether.

"Now we want to go even further and lift the amount of money people can earn before paying income tax to £12,500."

Just Not Up To It The Tories' Just Not Up To It campaign

The manifesto pledge comes as Labour has been running a "summer campaign", in which the party has been highly critical of the coalition's policies across all departments.

Meanwhile, the Conservatives have been running an online offensive targeting Ed Miliband.

They have launched a website under the title Just Not Up To It, which includes an interactive map showing the Labour MPs who have made disparaging comments about their leader.

Commenting on the Lib Dems' manifesto pledge, shadow treasury minister Cathy Jamieson said nobody would believe a word the Liberal Democrats said about tax.

She said: "They backed the Tories in giving a huge tax cut to millionaires while breaking their promise not to raise VAT on everybody else."

She added that Institute for Fiscal Studies figures showed families would be on average £973 a year worse off by next year because of the tax and benefit changes since 2010.
