Britain Too Reliant On US, Says Blair

Tony Blair has said the UK is too reliant on the US and cannot keep falling back on the special relationship to deal with problems on its doorstep - such as the situation in Ukraine.

At a speech to mark the 20th anniversary of him becoming Labour leader, Mr Blair said Britain must develop a strong foreign and defence policy and lead within Europe to tackle international issues.

He said Britain was "completely dependent on the US" and added: "We must develop the capability in Europe to deal with problems on our own doorstep".

Cameron warns Putin: 'The world is watching you'

Mr Blair said now was not the time to be talking about "leaving Europe" and that he would love to see Britain "leading in Europe".

And he warned Vladimir Putin he had to "take responsibility" for the downing of flight MH17 and the deaths of the 298 passengers and crew.

He said: "I think that is more likely that will happen if Europe and the US stand together."

The former Labour prime minister was speaking as David Cameron warned Mr Putin the "world was watching him".

Mr Cameron said the EU was ready to impose further sanctions on Russia if there was not "radical change in the way they behave".

Separatists are blocking access to the bodies and the crash site

He said: "It is an absolutely horrific incident that has taken place and what I said to Vladimir Putin is that the world today is watching Russia, the world is watching Putin and they want to know, everybody wants to know, that he will do everything in his power to make these separatists open up the site so there can be a proper investigation.

"But the world also wants to see a real change in the stance that Russia has taken over the crisis in the Ukraine. We need no more weapons crossing the border, no more troops crossing the border, no more support for the separatists and respect for Ukrainian territorial integrity."
