Flood Warning As Heavy Rain Sweeps Across UK

A huge rain band spreading from south west England to southern Scotland has brought flash flooding to Cornwall.

A "be aware" alert has been issued for the western half of England, Wales and the Borders, with up to 2.3ins (60mm) of rain possible in parts of the South West.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service crews responded to isolated incidents of flash flooding in the Porthleven, Perranporth, Redruth, Camborne, Bolingey, Newquay, Truro, Falmouth, Bude and Bodmin areas.

Western Power Distribution said its engineers were attempting to restore electricity to more than 500 properties in the St Teath area of north Cornwall.

A spokeswoman said: "We are looking into the cause and we hope to restore customers' power as soon as possible."

The flooding in Cornwall also caused the closure of the minor injury department at Newquay Community Hospital.

The heavy rain also damaged the unit's office and two of the three treatment rooms.

While the heavy rain is bad news for most it could help England's campaign to retain the Ashes, forcing a draw in the third Test.

Old Trafford woke to rain but play did get under way, albeit sporadically, before it stopped again after lunch with England 37 for three chasing 332 to win.

Sky News weather producer Chris England said:  "It's unlikely there will be much if any play for the Ashes, as the rain looks set to last well into the evening there."

He added: "Heavy rain which has brought flooding to parts of western Britain is beginning to clear from the far west now, as it pushes into more of central and north-eastern England.

"The rain will become largely confined to eastern counties by this evening, although the south east shouldn't see more than a few heavy showers, and will be largely gone by midnight.

"There's a risk of further localised flooding, with northern and western areas most at risk."

Looking ahead, he said: "Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland meanwhile will stay mostly dry with sunny spells, although the odd shower can't be ruled out.

"Tuesday and Wednesday will be much drier, with warm sunny spells for most, but there will be a few showery outbreaks around."

The rain and cooler temperatures follow weeks of hot weather which saw Thursday, August 1, become the hottest day of the year so far in the UK, when 34.1C was recorded at Heathrow.

The previous highest temperature was 33.5C which was recorded at both Northolt and Heathrow on July 22.
